October 5th, 2018.
That is the date that Sony Pictures have announced the projected release date for their Venom spin-off movie.
Whilst Tom Holland will be swinging into cinemas the 7th of July, 2017, the wheels are set in motion for the long-planned Venom movie courtesy of Sony Pictures, with no mention whatsoever of an inclusion from Marvel Studios.
Sony confirmed that Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (who worked on The Amazing Spider-man 2) are both onboard to pen the script.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that the film does not yet have a director attached, however, long-time Spider-man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will be onboard to produce and oversee the project.
It is widely expected that Sony will use Venom as a platform to launch a new franchise.
Whilst we have very little information on the Venom movie, we do have previous knowledge on how exactly Venom has been utilised by Sony in the past as the character was seen in 2007’s Spider-man 3 when Topher Grace of That ’70s Show fame went head-to-head with Tobey Maguire in perhaps the nerdiest looking fight in cinematic history.
As a personal favourite character from the Marvel Universe, I for one cannot wait to see what happens between now and next year. Hopefully, we’ll get some information soon.
