Are you Ready, Player One? Tye Sheridan and Co. Bring Ernest Cline’s Sci-Fi/’80s Homage to the Big Screen

From this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. showcased the first teaser for their live action adaptation of Ernest Cline’s debut novel, Ready Player One.

We had a segment on our radio show about this well over 12 months ago and waited with bated breath for some form of follow up news to be revealed.

Warner Bros., aside from all the DC news they dropped over the weekend, released the teaser, and much like the novel the movie is based upon, there were generous helpings of geeky references.

From a brief appearance from the Iron Giant to an appearance from the Delorean, it works as both an ode to the ‘80s, and all things geek-chic.

The trailer starts off with protagonist Wade Watts (played by X-Men: Apocalypse star Tye Sheridan) talking about life in the not too distant future.

Wade lives in Columbus, Ohio, though, the city looks completely different to how it probably does right now – I mean, I imagine, I’ve never actually been there. It could look like that.

Living in “the Stacks” – apartments built from cars, cargo boxes, and aluminium (or should that be “aluminum”) trailers, the Stacks are, quite literally, makeshift accommodations stacked on top of each other – Wade describes what life is like for his generation, known as the “missing millions.”

The only place where Wade and most of his generation feel they truly belong is within the Virtual Reality world known as OASIS.

It’s within this artificial world that players can meet the Iron Giant, and apparently even fight Freddy Krueger.

Because we’re nice at WTNH, here’s the trailer for you to enjoy;

The narrative of the novel, and therefore the movie, follows Wade as he joins an international scavenger hunt in the virtual world to track down three Easter Eggs that the programmers of OASIS plugged into the system.

Whoever finds all 3 is said to be able to control the system itself, so as you can imagine, plenty of people want in on the action.

The visuals look absolutely stunning, and in a world where the average movie-goer is completely underwhelmed and jaded to CGI and other high-end special effects, some of it looks absolutely jaw-dropping.

I mean, that car stunt, just, wow!

The film, which stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, Mark Rylance as James Donovan Halliday, Simon Pegg as Ogden Marrow, T.J. Miller as i-R0k, and Hannah John-Kamen as F’Nale Zandor, hits cinemas 30th March 2018.

Did I mention Steven Spielberg is directing it, by the way?

Yeah, that should do it.
