Over the past few years, there have been a number of rumours rumbling around the interwebs concerning the Men in Black franchise that, at one time, included a potential crossover with Sony’s 21 Jump Street franchise.
Whilst 21 Jump Street star Jonah Hill has said in the past that it’s doubtful the crossover would (could or should) be made, that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to do with the MiB series, as word has broken on 29th September that the studio will revisit the sci-fi comedy series with a spinoff, as opposed to a direct sequel or the rumoured crossover.
As reported by Deadline, the project, which will be written by the team behind Iron-Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, has got a tentative release date earmarked for 17th May 2019.
Whilst the series main-stays Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to return to their respective roles of Agent J and Agent K, it will follow members of the top-secret organisation devoted to monitoring alien lifeforms on Earth.
The film will reportedly focus on new characters instead, with more of a global focus planned than what has previously been seen in the franchise.
The aim is to do for MiB what Jurassic World did for its franchise, rebooting and ultimately expanding upon what came before it.
There are no directors yet attached, though Deadline says that the studio is “actively involved in meeting with top directors…and expect to land one quickly.”
Currently, the spin-off will have original producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald onboard, with Steven Spielberg as executive producer.
The Jump Street movie is apparently still in the works – as is a Charlie’s Angels reboot – but the spinoff MiB movie will take precedence, apparently.
Aside from that, Sony is also moving ahead with all of their Spider-Verse movies, with Venom to be released around 5th October 2018, an animated film featuring a script written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with a December 2018 release date attached, Silver & Black is currently ear-marked for 8th February 2019, and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming to be released 5th July 2019, so we can expect more content from those movies in the coming months I imagine.
