Back in September, news broke that comic book writer Mark Miller and his Millarworld series had been purchased by Netflix for live-action adaptations and more.
It has now been revealed that the first of Millar’s entries onto the online streaming site will be The Magic Order, which combines elements of fantasy with crime thrillers,
Millar will be teaming up with artist Olivier Coipel to bring the first Netflix comic to the world, with the six-issue series following five magical families who must face a new threat to their survival.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Millar said;
“So my idea with The Magic Order was to take something that’s essentially about a secret order of good wizards who got rid of all the bad things hundreds of years ago, but live quietly among us now with blue-collar jobs and ordinary domestic lives.
They have this secret life, but to the outside world it’s all very normal and it make the idea look more like The Sopranos than Lord of the Rings.“
This is the first news to come of the acquisition since August when Netflix acquired the rights to Millarworld, the comic book imprint that Millar founded himself back in 2013.
Millar, whose previous works include Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman will be developing properties for film and TV as well as publishing new comics, all within the Netflix banner, essentially making Netflix one of the biggest (i.e. with the largest bank accounts) comic book publishers in the world.
And thankfully, Millar’s first collaboration isn’t going to be with a total stranger either, as Millar has had a long-running relationship with Coipel.
“Olivier is probably the best artist working in comics right now,” Millar said.
“I’ve been trying to get him for almost 10 years, but he just keeps re-upping his deals elsewhere and I couldn’t get my hands on him.
But Netflix is very persuasive.
This is where everyone wants to be right now, and he’s as excited as I am about drawing this.”
Look out for The Magic Order in spring 2018.
