In the past, we’ve spoken about how Sony Pictures are producing a Spider-Verse series of movies based on several characters from Spider-Man’s cast of friends and foes…with one big catch.
The Sony Spider-Verse is supposed to be existing without Spider-Man.
Whilst this has been the case for as long as we’ve known about the Venom and Silver and Black movies, one rumour may suggest that the webbed wonder will be popping up in at least Venom…well, technically.
According to Jon Schnepp in an episode of Collider Heroes, Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland was reportedly on set for Sony’s Venom movie.
“Tom Holland was on set filming scenes on Venom for at least two days as Peter Parker.
…I’m not saying Spider-Man is in the film.
When I say Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is in the film, I’m saying Peter Parker is in the film.”
Whilst this is, as yet, an unconfirmed rumour, it might make a bit of sense – Sony still technically own the rights to Spider-Man and all related characters attached to the character, so they are free to incorporate him into whatever they would like, however, they would like.
Of course, if Tom Holland exists in the Sony Spider-Verse series of movies, then wouldn’t Venom and co. technically be connected to the MCU by proxy? It’s a confusing state of affairs that has plagued the prospective franchise since it was originally announced.
This might allow some sort of give-and-take with what Marvel Studios‘ President Kevin Feige said back in 2017 when he said Spider-Man would not be involved in the Venom movie – it’s not Spider-Man that we could be seeing, but rather his alter-ego.
Again, this does make everything seem strangely connected, and until we have confirmed reports that Tom Holland will actually be in Venom (as Peter Parker or otherwise) we’ll just have to keep speculating.
Venom is set to arrive in cinemas from the 5th October and stars Tom Hardy as Venom/Eddie Brock along with Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed.
Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and based off of a script by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
