The much talked about Fast and Furious spin-off featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham has had a few roadblocks thus far – namely F&F mainstay Tyrese Gibson’s disapproval of The Rock using the series for his own gain.
However, fans of the nitrous-fuelled action movies can rejoice as David Leitch may be about to take the wheel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch, who is also behind Deadpool 2, is currently the frontrunner for the role and is in ‘early talks’ to the F&F family. If he’s successful in joining the franchise, Leitch will be able to add another impressive action-movie to his resume, which currently includes the aforementioned Deadpool 2, John Wick, The Bourne Legacy, The Mechanic, Atomic Blonde, and V For Vendetta.
Currently, there are very few details known about the movie, but it has been confirmed that both Johnson and Statham will be involved and will reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw respectively.
The franchise has amassed over $5 billion at the box office since 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, and as such Universal has suggested that there could be potential for further spin-offs down the line, though it is currently unclear if or when they’ll materialise.
The as-yet-untitled Fast & Furious spin-off is expected to race through cinemas around the end of July 2019, featuring a script written by franchise writer Chris Morgan who has been involved in the series since its inception.
