The upcoming live-action Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Netflix series has cast the latest member of Sabrina’s spell-bounding gallery of characters; the wise-cracking cat, Salem Saberhagen.

Salem, a wizard who was transformed into a cat for trying to take over the world, is a black American short-hair with a propensity to make quips about his time as a cat, about witches and wizards in general, and dream about becoming human once more.

The announcement of Salem’s involvement in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina came via Twitter as Executive Producer and Archie Comics‘ Chief Creative Officer (as well as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book writer) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa released the first official image.

It isn’t confirmed whether this Salem will be able to talk in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, however, it was one of the best features of the ’90s Sabrina the Teenage Witch, bringing a lot of comedy to the series. If he will have the ability to speak, Salem could potentially bring some of that same comedy relief to the new series, which promises to be a lot darker than most fans are accustomed to.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has a two-season order from Netflix with 20 episodes planned, and will star Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman and Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind Walker. There is currently no release date announced, but we know it will act as a spin-off to the popular Riverdale series.
