There’s been a big name attached to the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, and fans have spent equal parts wondering why and praising the studios for the choice.
We are, of course, referring to the recent announcement that Kristen Wiig has been cast as the villainous Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2.
The announcement was confirmed by director Patty Jenkins via Twitter.
“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favourites. And SO excited by what we have planned.”
Wiig, who is more famous for her comedy roles in movies such as Bridesmaids and the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, will play the villainous Cheetah, a character who debuted back in 1943 and has appeared in no fewer than four different incarnations over the past seven and a half decades.
There are reports that Wonder Woman 2 will feature the third incarnation of the Cheetah character, Barbara Ann Minerva, who is described as a British anthropologist who becomes the cheetah god’s avatar after mistakenly finding her way into an ancient ritual.
The movie, which is still in pre-production, has a tentative release date for November 2019 and will star Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Kristen Wiig as Cheetah, with Patty Jenkins as director.
