The hugely popular cartoon series, Rick and Morty, has gone from strength to strength since its 2013 inception.
The series, part of the wider Adult Swim collection series, has reached unprecedented levels of popularity in recent years, with McDonald’s feeling the brunt of the cult-like following the show has garnered.
The show has brought the fast-food giants to their knees in the past 12 months as Rick and Morty made thousands of Americans demand their “spicy Szechuan Mulan sauce” make a return.
And yet, despite all of that popularity and apparent sway in the world, it seems as though Rick and Morty have not yet been picked up for the 4th season.
Series co-creator Dan Harmon took to Twitter recently to reply to a fan and give a bit of an explanation as to whether the show is still on track.
“I hear ya, tough spot. On one hand, it can be challenging, especially with crippling lazy alcoholism, to write a show that hasn’t been ordered by a network. On the other hand, the thought that fans like you pay the price…I mean…I’m gonna grab a drink”
There’s currently not a lot known as to why Adult Swim is yet to pick up the fourth season, but Harmon recently clarified some of his comments on a recent edition of the SModcast.
“The reason we’re not working on Rick and Morty right now ain’t because I figured out that I don’t need to impress you. It’s because of a little something called contract negotiations and it’s gotten complicated this time around.”
It’s difficult to know why Adult Swim has yet ordered the fourth Season, but, given the show’s immense popularity, it can’t be long before they decide to do so. The third season brought in record numbers of ratings and viewing figures for the network, but that also had a long gestation period.
However, it could, in fact, be because of the show’s popularity that things are not moving forward yet; maybe it’s partially the fan’s fault? The aforementioned cult-like following the show has garnered is well-known as being quite toxic at times, and select individual’s actions during the Szechuan sauce fiasco last year won’t help anyone.
The supply and demand for all things Rick and Morty may have reached a saturation point for now.
