The impact of Marvel Studio‘s Avengers: Infinity War has created memes, drawn in well over $1 billion worldwide, and changed the future of the MCU forever in the process.
And the impact that Thanos has had on the wider pop-culture has also sprung up in video games as well.
No fewer than two mainstream video games have the Mad Titan (or, at the very least, references to him) pop up in the past few weeks.
Firstly, the most popular game of 2017/2018, Fortnite, the battle-royale game that has taken the world by storm has a cross-promotional add-on happening right now.
Thanos is making his presence felt in Fortnite (as of 8th May), in, what developer Epic Games has dubbed a “limited time mashup.”
As we’ve seen in gameplay online since Tuesday, the “Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup” mode allows one lucky player per match to find, and wield, the Infinity Gauntlet and actually become Thanos himself!
Initially, the game’s Thanos was way too over-powered, featuring a massive shield, health bar, and attacking power. However, in a patch brought in by Epic Games, Thanos has since been nerfed, with decreased shields and attacking power, though his health has increased by 100 points.
The game still features the usual gameplay mechanics, namely, 100 players fall from a flying battle bus and descend upon the battlefield. Matches are fought until all but one player is left victorious.
The Infinity Gauntlet mode places the mystical Marvel artefact in a randomly generated spot on the map, waiting for a player to pick up and unleash absolute power upon the battlefield.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, it was Infinity War directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, who instigated the crossover, as the brothers are reportedly big fans of the game, and, as a result, called Donald Mustard, the worldwide creative director of Epic Games about the event.
“Over the past few months, while we were editing Infinity War, we’d take breaks to hop on and get in a few games,” Joe told EW.
“And then we started thinking, ‘how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers-Fortnite mashup?’ So we stalked Donald.”
There is currently no reported end-date for the event, which is available to play across all platforms.
The second Infinity War tie-in is slightly less obvious but still blatant.
Courtesy of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the recently released Playstation 4 game, God of War, features a homage to Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet itself.
The Easter Egg comes via one of God of War‘s side-quests, “Shattered Gauntlet of the Ages.”
Gamespot posted a video on how to find the Gauntlet and complete the mission.
Following the game’s “Fafnir’s Hoard” and the “Family Business” quests, protagonist Kratos is presented with the mystical Shattered Gauntlet of the Ages. Like its Marvel Studio‘s counterpart, the Shattered Gauntlet features spaces for different enchantments, a la the Infinity Stones. The main difference is that the Infinity Gauntlet can hold six stones, whereas the Shattered Gauntlet will only hold three.
However, God of War still features six different artefacts that represent the Infinity Stones;
Andvari’s Soul instead of the Soul Stone, Eye of the Outer Realm for the Space Stone, Asgard’s Shard of Existence in place of the Reality Stone, the Njord Temporal Stone represents the Time Stone, the Mind Stone is replaced by Invaldi’s Corrupted Mine, and we have Muspelhein’s Eye of Power which equals the Power Stone.
With any three of the artefacts in Kratos’ possession, the Shattered Gauntlet will benefit from different effects (which, of course, is dependent upon which three are chosen), and will feature a super-powered attack; a massive beam of energy projected forwards.
Both of these in-game Easter Eggs are available now, so get out there and find that Gauntlet and wield absolute power.
Fortnite is available for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh operating systems, and can be downloaded for free (with optional, in-game purchases available).
God of War is available on the Playstation 4 for £47.99 (game.co.uk).
