The long-gestating Watchmen TV series is starting to pick up a bit of steam.

Thanks to Deadline, we have a casting announcement, though not necessarily what roles each actor will portray.

The upcoming HBO series cast list for the pilot episode includes; Don Johnson (Django Unchained), Regina King (The Leftovers), Louis Gossett Jr (Hap and Leonard), Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk), Adelaide Clemens (Silent Hill: Revelation), and Andrew Howard (Bates Motel). Showrunner Damon Lindelof has previously worked alongside Regina King whilst they were both working on HBO‘s The Leftovers.

Apparently, whilst we don’t have confirmation as to which of the iconic Alan Moore characters will appear in the series, Lindelof has teased that the new series will introduce some “new faces” to the Watchmen franchise. How well that goes down remains to be seen, of course.

And, according to Deadline, Regina King is rumoured to play a character named Angela Abar; whilst Louis Gossett Jr will star as a character simply called Old Man; Andrew Howard will apparently play Red Scare and Adelaide Clemens is set to play Pirate Jenny.

Furthermore, Lindelof mentioned how the new series will not be a direct adaptation of Alan Moore’s comic book series, nor will it serve as a conventional sequel. The comic book will act as canonical history to the series, which will exist in a contemporary setting based within the same universe.

There’s no release date currently slated, though it is expected to start production later this year.
