We love comic books here at What The Nerd Heard (you may have gathered).
They’re one of the preferred past times of the team here, and we’re also very high on ComiXology, a digital marketplace wherein you have access to thousands of issues, all within the palm of your hand.
Recently, ComiXology has been upping their game when it comes to releasing comic books – specifically, their ComiXology Originals line, which brings in exclusive digital content from various publishers. They’ve had hugely successful runs from Marvel, Image, and other big comic publishers, alongside their independent contributors as well.
Well, things are about to get even better for fans of the Originals line, as ComiXology has announced they will be offering a print-on-demand service for select titles.
This could spark a revolution in the industry, something akin to what Netflix has done for the TV industry; by making their own content alongside third-party publishers, ComiXology could establish themselves as a trendsetter, or better still, the only source of such material.
And there is very little worry that the print industry would suffer either (well, any more than it already has, of course). Whilst these digital releases are convenient, they still don’t offer the same “hold-in-your-hand” appeal that you get from a bricks-and-mortar comic book store. There will always be a place for them in the world.
Looking back at the Originals line-up, which was confirmed via a Twitch live stream, ComiXology is going to run the following series;
- Savage Game; by Ryan Kalil of the NFL‘s Carolina Panthers, written by Shawn Kittelsen, and with art by Chris B Murray
- Superfreaks; written by Elsa Charretier and Pierrick Colinet, with art by Margaux Saltet
- Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty; written by Richard Starkings, with art by Axel Medellin and Boo Cook
- Ask For Mercy; written by Richard Starkings, with art by Abigail Jill Harding
All of these comics are currently available and are free to read for members of Amazon Prime (Amazon is the parent company of ComiXology), Kindle Unlimited and ComiXology Unlimited customers, or, alternatively, are available to purchase to Kindle and ComiXology users.
Added to this impressive list, ComiXology has also publicly announced a list of creators they’ll be featuring in upcoming, yet-to-be-announced, creator-owned Originals series, including; Tyler Crook, Kristian Donaldson, Alti Firmansyah, Sam Humphries, Megan Kearney, Kel McDonald, Hope Nicholson, Mike Norton, MK Reed, Mark Sable, Tim Seeley, C Spike Trotman, Jen Vaughn, and Magdalene Visaggio.
Evidently, it’s an exciting time to be a ComiXology fan.
