Before we begin, let me start by saying this; The world does not need another Howard the Duck movie.
Okay, so, recently, actress and director Lea Thompson, best known as Lorraine Baines within the Back to the Future trilogy (aka, the best trilogy ever made. Fight me), has spoken about how she’s pitching a Howard the Duck reboot for the MCU.
Whilst we know he exists in the current MCU – Howard was seen ever so briefly in the Collector’s collection, prior to Thanos destroying everything, of course – but, long before the MCU was even a contemplation, Marvel‘s foul-mouthed fowl appeared in his own feature-length flick. And, yes, Thompson starred in that too, hence the connection.
The original, 1986 movie often joins lists of “worst comic book movies ever”, and, despite garnering something of a cult following, the movie was a critical and commercial failure for director Willard Huyuck.
Fun fact; Howard the Duck was the first Marvel movie, EVER! Oh, how far we’ve come.
Thompson spoke to Inquisitr about her ambition to reboot the series for a more comic-book-movie friendly audience. Thompson also revealed how she’d love to reprise her role as Beverly Switzler, Howard’s on-screen…friend, let’s go with friend.
“I tell you the actual truth, I am going to Marvel to pitch Howard the Duck, a new movie. In like three weeks. I want to direct the Howard the Duck remake. Why not dream big, right?”
Whether anything materialises from the pitch remains to be seen, however, James Gunn has previously shot down any rumoured plans for Howard joining the MCU – at least, whilst under his control.
Sadly though, Kevin Feige might turn this into something, as he has expressed an interest in the anthropomorphic duck, and what might be in store for his future.
“You know, the fun thing about Howard is he shows up where you least expect him, so like who knows where he’s going to appear next?”
Whilst this might sound more like a teaser or even an in-joke, it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Howard pops up again in some way before the MCU is done and dusted. Howard has been confirmed to have survived Thanos’ finger-snap, and there are a lot of unannounced movies set within Marvel‘s Phase 4.
The future is bright, and, worryingly, it might contain feathers.
